Outdoor Event Sound Buying Guide

Outdoor sound is a different discipline from indoor installation — there are no walls to help contain sound, weather is a real risk to equipment, and power is often unreliable. This guide covers how to size, power and protect a PA system for outdoor events in Kenya, from small weddings to large festivals.

Sizing the System to Crowd and Distance

Outdoor sound loses roughly 6dB every time distance from the speaker doubles, with no walls to reflect and reinforce it the way an indoor room does. Systems need to be sized generously compared to an equivalent indoor event.

Delay Towers and Coverage

For large or long outdoor grounds, a single stack at the stage can't cover the whole crowd evenly without being uncomfortably loud up front. Delay towers — additional speaker stacks placed further back and time-aligned to the main system — extend even coverage without the front rows being blasted.

Power Planning

Outdoor venues rarely have reliable grid power matched to the load of a full PA and lighting rig. Power planning failures are one of the most common causes of outdoor event sound failures in Kenya.

  • Always budget for a backup generator sized above your calculated peak load, not just matching it
  • Use a clean, stable power source — voltage fluctuation damages amplifiers and DSP units
  • Separate lighting and sound circuits where possible to avoid dimmer noise bleeding into audio
  • Have a qualified technician confirm cable gauge and distance limits for the power runs on site

Weatherproofing Equipment

Kenyan outdoor events face both intense sun/heat and sudden rain, sometimes in the same afternoon. Equipment and cabling need real protection, not improvised covers.

  • Weather-rated (IP-rated) speaker enclosures for equipment that will be exposed for the full event
  • Waterproof cases or covers for mixers, amp racks and DSP units, with rain covers ready even under a canopy
  • Raised or covered cable runs to avoid pooling water and trip hazards
  • A contingency plan for pausing or protecting equipment during sudden downpours

Wind is a real risk to line arrays and towers

Any elevated speaker array or truss tower needs to be properly rigged and ballasted against wind loads — check the wind rating of your rigging and have a plan to lower or secure equipment if conditions worsen.

Microphones and Wireless Coordination

Outdoor events with multiple wireless mics (MC, speeches, performers) need frequency coordination in advance to avoid dropouts, especially in areas with other RF activity nearby such as broadcast vans or nearby venues.
